Willhammer harnesses help withstand the effects of orthostatic intolerance, while most other harnesses can kill within minutes:
Suspension trauma death is caused by orthostatic intolerance, also
referred to as orthostatic incompetence. Basically, when a person is
suspended by a mount between the shoulder blades, their body's entire
weight transfers to the upper legs, near the groin area. The harness
straps act as two tourniquets and create tremendous pressure around the
legs, trapping a large enough volume of blood to starve the heart,
which eventually causes the body to shut down. According to the eLCOSH
study "Will
Your Safety Harness Kill You?", the average person will fall unconscious within three to five
minutes and actually die within eight to twelve minutes if not rescued within this time.
From the "Will Your Safety Harness Kill You?" Article:
"After a fall: 1) Workers should be trained to try to move their legs in the harness and try to push against any footholds. 2) Workers hanging in a harness should be trained to try to get their legs as high as possible and their heads as close to horizontal as possible (this is nearly impossible with many commercial harnesses in use today). 3) It the worker is suspended upright, emergency measures must be taken to remove the worker from suspension or move the fallen worker into a horizontal posture, or at least to a sitting position. 4) All personnel should be trained that suspension in an upright condition for longer than five minutes can be fatal."
